Daniel R. Dietderich

Staff Scientist in the Superconducting Magnet Group at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory A.B in Physics from the University of California, Berkeley, CA M.S. and Ph.D. in Materials Science from the University of California, Berkeley, CA

After receiving my Ph.D. from Berkeley I accepted a research position at the National Research Institute for Metals (now NIMS) in Tsukuba, Japan. After 3 years of HTS and LTS materials research in Japan I returned to Berkeley with a position in the LBNL Superconducting Magnet Group, with the task of developing new materials and improving existing materials for high field magnets for High Energy Physics applications. I have over 20 years experience in fabrication, characterization, and testing of both LTS (Nb3Sn and NbTi) and HTS (YBCO, Bi-2212, and Bi-2223) materials. The fabrication techniques include both bulk wire and cable processing as well as thin film techniques

I have over 25 years of experience in applied superconductivity with over 100 publications on the metallurgy, chemistry, and electromagnetic properties of LTS and HTS superconductors. I have a few patents for processing of HTS materials (one that has actually made money). From my perspective, one of the best aspects of superconducting materials research is its multi-disciplinary nature which is an excellent base for training the next generation of scientist and engineers.

In terms of profession service, I am a member of the Materials Research Society and I supervise undergraduate research assistants.

On an annual basis I am asked to review several Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) Grants for DOE. For many years I have served as session a chair at ASC and ICMC meetings with the associated task of seeing that papers are reviewed in a timely manner. For ASC 2004 I have accepted the task of a technical editor.
